Auricular Therapy

Smoking is the main reason for numerous diseases affecting your respiratory system. It has become an addiction in the youth, and as a result chain smokers suffer from all kinds of health problems. Auricular therapy is an ideal treatment option for those who wish to quit smoking. You can quit smoking with auricular therapy because it not only treats the psychological aspect of the individual, but focuses on the reduction of your body's desire for nicotine as well.

Each area of the ear, according to auricular therapy is related to a different anatomical portion of the body. The human ear constitutes a large number of sites or points, which react in the presence of disease or injury on the other parts of the body. So applying stimulations on those ear points can bring about cure for all the diseases.

Auricular medicine originated in China and has since then been developed in Europe to attain its present state. The treatment consists of analyzing the external ear and treating problems associated with different parts of the body. After years of careful observation, Chinese medical professionals have charted more than 200 sites on the ear associated with various diseases.

Auricular therapy focuses on the pressure points or nerve endings of the ears that are directly connected to the brain. By stimulating these pressure points, one can reduce food craving and this in turn curtails excessive dietary intake. Instead of using needles that can be painful and discomforting, mild electrical stimulation intercepts and blocks brain signals that demand more food.

The point is then stimulated either electrically or with small conventional needles. The needles are kept in for about 15 minutes and manipulated every now and then. Alternatively, a small ring-needle or seed may be fixed to the point in the ear and retained for several days, providing continuous treatment lasting for a short period of time.

Used by acupuncturists, physicians, chiropractors, massage therapists, psychologists and other health care providers, auricular therapy is one of the lesser known, though extremely effective alternative healing modalities. Points on the ear can be stimulated by manual pressure, needles, lasers, magnets, and ear acupressure pellets. Auricular therapy without needles can be as effective as acupuncture.

The actual method involves either placement of sterile, single use hair thin needles onto the external surface (outer) of the ear. Alternatively low level laser may be used. Generally a selection of points (normally 2 - 5) are used, and often combined with specific body points (again able to be stimulated by needle or laser). It is a 100% pain free method that often leaves the patient relaxed and very comfortable.

There are certain contraindications for Auricular or Ear Reflexology that include eczema sores or psoriasis that are usually open or wounds that are not healed in the ears. Sessions should then be postponed till the condition clears up or are healed. An alternative map for the hands or feet can be used in the meantime.

In general, reflexology is used to reduce stress because both the feet and hands help set the tension level for the rest of the body. If you are able to fix that, then there is balance in the body. It can also help those who are suffering from arthritis, back pain, digestive disorders or problems, hormonal imbalance, insomnia, menstrual disorders, sports injuries and tension headaches.
